Eight local gardening enthusiasts will be out of the sunlight and into the spotlight next weekend during the annual Medicine Hat and District Horticultural Society Garden Tour.

The tour is taking place July 16 from noon to 5 p.m., with 600 tickets available. Communications director Mel Deydey says he is looking forward to the 26th annual event.

“This is a great showcase of people’s gardens,” he said. “When people buy a ticket they get a self-guided tour of the eight homes being showcased this year. The gardens that are on display have been nominated by other people, so we’re looking forward to what people have to show this year.”

There is not set time slots for each home to be seen throughout the event. People can start at whichever house they want, and end after seeing as many as they would like. People are encouraged to ask questions and take pictures of things that may pique their interests.

“A really big part of this is the education aspect,” he said. “This is a great way for people who are very passionate about gardening to see new things and to share ideas with others around the city. I know there’s quite a few people who look forward to the garden tour every year.”

Deydey has been affiliated with the event for roughly 15 years, and says it has grown in popularity over the years.

“People are very enthusiastic about gardening in Medicine Hat,” he said. “The show is a great way for people who share the same passion to get together once each year and really talk and share ideas. You hear a lot of people learning about certain plants that may or may not grow in Medicine Hat. It’s a really great event.”

Another big draw to this year’s tour are the three heritage houses that will be shown off, including the Duggan House downtown.

Tickets are $10 and can be found at Blondies Garden Centre, the Windmill Garden Centre, the Tourist Information Centre, Crescent Heights Florists and the Redcliff Public Library.
