Tie vote dashes extra dog hopes in Redcliff

With summer hitting, Redcliff council held its only meeting of the month Monday, but making some important decisions for the town.

Before things got going, council received two presentations.

The first was done by Redcliff RCMP Staff Sgt. Sean Maxwell, giving his quarterly update on the town.

Though things like theft and mischief saw slight increases, Maxwell said the town seems to be in fairly normal shape as it currently sits, and hopes the RCMP can continue to work with the youth on the importance of helmets when cycling.

Thrive

The second presentation was from three women from the group Thrive, aimed at ending poverty in Medicine Hat and its surrounding area.

The group asked council if one member would join the Thrive board for its monthly meetings and to work with the group to fight poverty in the town.

“This is something important that we are very interested in doing,” said Mayor Ernie Reimer. “Any chance we can get to help the people out who may be falling through the cracks is a good one in my eyes.” Council will be deciding who will

take the seat at a later date.

Two is enough

After last month’s meeting saw a group of dog owners propose the idea of a special licence to allow a third dog in each Redcliff household, council voted at a 3-3 tie on the matter. Since there was only six council members present, the tie meant the delegation was defeated.

“I was a bit surprised to see this defeated, but that’s what we are going to go with,” said Reimer. “I’m not certain what the time frame is, but I know eventually a group can come back and propose a new idea to council on the bylaw. For now it will be a two-dog limit.”
