RCMP briefs from around the province

Provincial department­s are in the process of contacting Albertans who might be affected after a van’s worth of government mail was stolen.

The private courier van was stolen on June 23, en route to deliver mail in Red Deer. It was carrying both incoming and outgoing government mail that may have contained personal informatio­n.

The vehicle has since been recovered, but the contents have not been located.

The Office of the Informatio­n and Privacy Commission­er was immediatel­y notified of the theft and government continues to update OIPC regularly. Anyone who sent mail in the Red Deer area to the provincial government through Canada Post in the days before June 23 is asked to call the department involved to ensure items were received.

For contact informatio­n for those offices, call 310-0000 between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or visit alberta.ca and click on “Government staff directory” at the bottom of the page and type in the name of the person you mailed.

The province has contacted all other couriers who are under contract to deliver government mail, instructin­g them to review security procedures with their drivers.

Anyone with informatio­n on the theft of the vehicle and its contents is asked to call Red Deer RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575.

Okotoks

RCMP are investigat­ing after human remains were found on the morning of July 17 at a constructi­on site. A search of the area is taking place in regards to the investigat­ion.

Cochrane

A three-year-old girl has died following a single vehicle rollover collision on July 15 near Cochrane.

The vehicle was traveling on Highway 1A, approximat­ely one kilometre west of Goodstoney Rodeo Grounds. The three-year-old girl from Stoney First Nation was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 32-year-old driver was transporte­d to a Calgary Hospital where he remains in serious condition. The collision remains under investigat­ion.

Jasper

Charges have been laid after Jasper RCMP arrested a man with an axe on July 9.

Police were dispatched at 1:35 p.m. to the Maligne Lake parking lot, where a highly intoxicate­d male suspect was allegedly threatenin­g people with an axe and was smashing car windows. Once on scene, police were advised that a bystander was able to take the axe away from the suspect and he was detained by multiple people.

An 18-year-old Quinten Delaney Campbell of Rycroft, Alta. was arrested and taken into custody without incident, and charged with one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of mischief under $5,000, and two counts of uttering death threats.

Killam

A 31-year-old man from Stettler was arrested on July 7, following reports of a man committing indecent acts over several days near a school.

The actions allegedly occurred from June 30 to July 3, although no children or persons were believed to be present in or outside the school when the alleged acts took place.

Police investigat­ed, and identified the man, charging Evan Jepsen with four counts of committing an indecent act.
