HAT Smart funds for attic insulation used up, as homeowners take advantage of rebate

-

City grants to help pay for attic insulation upgrades have been exhausted, according to a release by the City of Medicine Hat’s HAT Smart program coordinator.

Last month, the utility committee heard that funding requests for the program — which offered up to a $500 rebate on work — would soon see money run out.

Contractors had said early this spring that the city program, combined with a provincial grant to boost energy efficiency would be well received by potential customers.

“The response to the rebate programs has been fantastic this year,” says Daygan Fowler, Environmental Sustainability Officer with the City’s HAT Smart program. “Medicine Hat residents have had the opportunity to access funding from two incentive programs, which has led to an increase in popularity of our programs.”

A separate provincial program that provides a pro-rated grant of up to $1,000 depending on the level of efficiency installed is still available though the province’s agency Energy Efficiency Alberta.

“Although the attic insulation program is now fully subscribed, we are encouraging residents to continue submitting applications to HAT Smart for work completed to date,” Fowler added. “While additional funding isn’t guaranteed, received applications will be held on file and considered at the end of this year’s program.”

HAT Smart funding is still available for those considering the installation of solar-electric systems of 1,000 per kW to a maximum of $5,000.
