Not-guilty pleas were entered Wednesday to charges that stem back to Canada Day 2016 over an alleged carjacking attempt in Redcliff.

Defence counsel for Daniel Joseph Landry elected to enter the plea, while Landry works to get a second assessment on whether he is criminally responsible for his actions on that day, a report that could counter the original NCR assessment.

Landry was arrested by Redcliff RCMP after police received reports of an erratic driver travelling at high rates of speed. RCMP stopped the vehicle but the driver approached another parked vehicle, attempted to forcefully remove the driver, and refused to co-operate with police.

Child luring

A man who pled guilty to child luring, but then denied culpability for the crime, will now be sentenced on Aug. 30.

Lawrence Evans appeared briefly by CCTV from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre Wednesday, with counsel adjourning until the end of this month, and confirming this as the sentencing date.

Evans pled guilty in March to child luring, and signed an agreed statement of facts over the incidents where he allegedly contacted an 11-year-old Medicine Hat girl via social media, and attempted to meet with her. A presentencing report was ordered at the time, and sentencing date set, but when this date arrived, the presentencing report found that despite the guilty plea, Evans was not admitting his culpability.

This led to his counsel withdrawing from the record, and adjournments so Evans could secure a new lawyer.

Break and enter

A 40-year-old man will be serving five and a half months in jail for breaking and entering an industrial site to steal items, having a stolen vehicle in his possession, and skipping his trial for this stolen vehicle.

Glenn Kelly pled guilty to these three charges Wednesday, after failing to secure his release through bail.

Kelly was originally charged Dec. 17, 2015 for the stolen truck after police found him in possession of it while at a local motel. He pled not guilty, but then did not show up for his trial.

Kelly was then arrested on July 7, 2017 after using a piece of metal to climb over barbed wire on a fence and into an industrial compound in Redcliff. Kelly was observed pushing a dolly filled with items that would have been worth over $5,000. Police were called and he was arrested immediately.

While Judge Darwin Greaves reduced the total sentence due to time spent in custody, and taking note of gaps in Kelly’s criminal record, the judge refused a request by Kelly to serve on weekends.
