Neighbourhood pub a great gathering place

-

A neighbourhood pub can be much more than just a place to drop in for a cold beer or glass of wine. Many try to offer “gemuetlichkeit,” a German word that aptly conveys an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness from the servers, owners and the other patrons.

My favourite pub in Riverside is a place where you will hear interesting conversation, humour, laughter and see familiar faces with regulars seeking our their favourite stools at the bar.

Some pubs are just a place to drink and gamble and watch sports. I suppose that’s all some people want, not a place to actually enjoy the atmosphere, to feel somehow like one is in a place that is there for one’s enjoyment.

Many of the frequent visitors are what I would consider middle age; one gentleman is 86 years old. Whoever first established the pub was aware that there are people in this city who appreciate a bit of “gemuetlichkeit.”

There are always a few copies of newspapers, including The News, right at the bar and always read. Other than the servers and the owners not too many there know my name. I usually sit off to the side, observing and listening and enjoying a glass of that cool and tasty brew. There is good food too and nobody seems to drink more than would be considered appropriate. Here’s to you. Prost!
