Folk music club to celebrate with Tunes at the Tepee

Musicians from far and wide will come to The Gas City and be in a celebratory mood on Sept. 16.

The Medicine Hat Folk Music Club will mark its 15th year and Canada’s 150th with Tunes at the Tepee.

“It’s a five-hour free concert for the entire city,” the club’s executive director Rob Pape said this week of the 5-10 p.m. show, adding the club got financial assistance for the concert by way of a Canada 150 grant.

The Medicine Hat Folk Music Club knows a thing or two about large-scale concerts; it puts on the annual Tongue on the Post Folk Music Festival each winter.

“This is an opportunity to welcome all the kids back to school and let everybody in the community get out for a feel-good kind of night,” Pape said.

The scheduled performers are a mix of outof-towners and locals.

Folk Road Show, a group of five singer-songwriters from Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, The Mayhemmingways from southern Ontario and Scott Cook from Edmonton are the visiting performers. The locals are Derek Hintz and The Buckshot Bandoliers, Prairie Ride with Ali Sellin and Ron Mason’s Margaret Wooding School Choir.

Food trucks will be on site and donations to the local food bank will be accepted. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

To provide as much room as possible and ensure the audience’s safety there will be no parking at the Saamis Tepee site. The parking lot at the Moose Community Ball Complex will be open and Prairie Sprinter will run a shuttle from the front entrance of Medicine Hat College to the tourism centre from 4:30-10:30 p.m.
