Vancouver Aquarium bringing the ocean to Medicine Hat for a five-day visit
Public can visit at Interpretive Centre Sunday
The Canada 150 AquaVan program (which is free of charge) will be visiting Medicine Hat between Sept. 10-14. Part of that time they will be delivering the AquaVan program to schools in Medicine Hat.
This Sunday, the AquaVan will be at the Interpretive Centre in Police Point Park so the public can see and hear their ocean educators, a bunch of sea stars, urchins, anemones, crabs and marine artifacts. During this time, they may also also recruit and help lead a shoreline cleanup. Shoreline cleanups provides Canadians the opportunity to take action in their communities wherever water meets land, one bit of trash at a time.
The AquaVan program started in 1994 as an innovative way to take the Vancouver Aquarium experience to locations around B.C. and western Canada. Programming is now offered in both official languages, facilitates personal connections to the oceans by allowing people to touch marine artifacts and live marine invertebrates and, engage with our ocean educators.
The AquaVan150 transcontinental tour was initiated to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, including participation in the Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.
AquaVan150 is visiting schools, camps, museums and community events from coast to coast to coast. The program includes information on Canada’s waterways and highlight region-specific information including local history, indigenous peoples content, marine protected areas, current environmental challenges and science in support of ocean literacy. This project fosters civic appreciation and enhanced stewardship of our environment, increases collective understanding of our oceans and watersheds by connecting Canadians to their local aquatic habitats.
