The Terry Fox run is a tradition Canadians have taken part in for more than 30 years.

The run is held locally each year at Kin Coulee Park, where participants walked, ran, biked or jogged a three-kilometre course.

“The Terry Fox Run has been something that we’ve hosted since its inception,” said Nicole Nugent, co-chair of the local run. “This is the 36th annual Terry Fox Run, and we usually get about 50-100 people taking part each year. I think our best year ever was just over $10,000, but no matter what we raise, the money goes to a great cause. We know there has been so many people impacted or affected by cancer, and this is a great way to help raise a bit of money each year.”

Nugent says the club aims to raise around $5,000 during each year’s event, all of which will go towards a good cause.

“We want to find that cure for cancer,” she said. “Hopefully by raising every little bit, we can slowly get there.”

Nugent says she knows this is an event that means a lot to people every year.

“Terry Fox was a great Canadian,” she said. “The Terry Fox Run really brings people together to celebrate Terry Fox and the things he was able to accomplish in his life.”

The event has been organized locally by the Kinette Club of Medicine Hat, and Nugent says the club does not want to see Fox’s legacy go away.

“For me, and for a lot of the women, we know people who have gone through, or are currently going through cancer treatments,” she said. “Terry Fox is someone who had a dream, and he went after it full force. If this is something we can do to continue on that legacy, then why not?”
