Riding the rails at Aspen Crossing

- MARILYN KRAUSE

Aspen Crossing Railway located southeast of Calgary and one kilometre west of Mossleigh is where you will find a unique train experience.

We recently took advantage of the Open Farm Days mini tour which was an hour long ride on a full-size excursion train. The day was sunny as we explored the different rail cars which are also used on the many railway excursions Aspen Crossing offers during the summer and fall months. Tours include a Prairie Tour, Twilight Tour, Champagne Brunch Excursion Train, Dinner Theatre, Wine and Cheese to name a few.

In October they run the Train of Terror for Halloween and starting in November until Christmas they run the Polar Express train. Based on the movie, the event has been authorized by Rail Events and Warner Bros. and is only the second location in Canada to offer this excursion. Scenes from the movie are acted out, readings from the book, stopping to pick up Santa and plenty of hot chocolate and cookies will make for a very memorable experience for children and adults alike.

We also enjoyed lunch after our train ride in the restaurant located in the stationary 1887 Pullman Dining Car which was once used by former prime minister John Diefenbaker. The gift shop is a replica of a CPR train station and during the spring there is also a garden centre.

If you are a camper the RV campground is for you, you can even book an overnight stay in one of the three Caboose Cabins. For an all-around unique train experience for young and old make sure you visit Aspen Crossing Railway, you won’t be disappointed.
