While many people like to take vacations during the summer, members of the Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat were busy driving around the city examining thousands of houses in an attempt to name the best block and best residence in the city.

The big winners this year were the residents of Crestwood Drive, winning the best block award, and the residents of 7 Redwood Place.

Members of the Kiwanis Club gathered Saturday afternoon at Crestwood Drive to honour the winners with plaques, and give them bragging rights for the year.

“This is something we’ve been doing for the community for more than 60 years,” said project chair Jan Owen. “This is something we offer to people that is just for fun, but it allows people to be competitive, too.”

Owen says the residents face different challenges keeping their properties neat, tidy and looking great every year.

“Sometimes it’s too much rain, sometimes, like this year, it’s not enough rain,” she said. “The weather can really make it harder on some people to keep their grass really green, or to make sure all of their plants stay alive for the summer.”

The winners of this year’s competition will be ineligible to compete next year, in an attempt to keep as many people involved as possible, says Owen.

“If we had the same people winning every year, I think people would get bored,” she said. “The way we do it now, it gives people bragging rights for a year, while letting other people try to get a plaque in their name.”

The homeowners of 7 Redwood Place were not in the city Saturday, and will be getting a ceremony at a separate date.
