Rattlers rebound with big win over Trojans

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s soccer team shook off a 2-1 loss to the Olds Broncos Saturday and came back to hand the SAIT Trojans their first loss of the season with a 2-0 shutout.

Attacking midfielder Jordyn Bell put Medicine Hat on the board 24 minutes into the game then Francesca Schottner doubled up on the lead just before the half-time break.

The Rattlers held strong defensivel­y in the second, with goalkeeper Kassidy Suberlak closing out the match with an even 10 saves, to put the Rattlers at 3-1-1 on the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference season while dropping the Trojans to 4-1-0.

Meagan Clarke scored Medicine Hat’s lone goal in Saturday’s loss to Olds. The veteran midfielder put one past Broncos goalkeeper Auslin Rae McDaniel-Perrin in the 87th minute to bring the score to 2-1, but they were unable to finds the equalizer in the dying minutes. McDaniel-Perrin finished with 13 saves for Olds, while Suberlak stopped six but was beaten twice by Broncos midfielder Rachel Brodie.

While the Rattlers men’s squad was able to win its Saturday match against Olds in a 1-0 nailbiter, they were unable to defeat the Trojans in Sunday’s game at MHC.

SAIT stretched a 3-0 on a goal from Romel Ayerdis and two more from Dean Northover before Forkpa Sumo managed to beat Trojans goalkeeper Kyle Greenley in stoppage time and spoil the shutout.

The Rattlers fall three points behind the Trojans following the loss at 3-1-1 on the year. SAIT improved to 40-1.

Victor Cambeiro scored Medicine Hat’s lone goal in Saturday’s win while goalkeeper Devin Simon stopped four shots to preserve the shutout victory.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s soccer teams head to Lethbridge to take on the Kodiaks Saturday.
