Medicine Hat’s Dr. Ken Sauer School held its grand opening on Wednesday afternoon with its namesake in attendance.

Alberta Education Minister David Eggen, local MLAs Bob Wanner and Drew Barnes, Mayor Ted Clugston, SD76 chair Rick Massini and superintendent Mark Davidson, as well as the school board’s trustees, were also present.

“It is the people who make the difference within these walls,” said principal Jason Peters. “I want to thank the staff who worked tirelessly and in a very short time frame to prepare the building and build a culture in the school that is inclusive, encourages important inquiry and emphasizes working together through integrated projects.”

He also provided a special thanks to the school’s students.

“Thank you to each of you for being open to something new, for being kind to one another and for being patient, especially for our playground to open,” said Peters.

Eggen told the students to relish the opportunity to learn in a brand new facility.

“Boys and girls, you don’t get to go to a brand new school very often. I taught for 20 years and I never got to work at a new school like this,” said Eggen.

Later in the ceremony, the audience was shown a short video about Sauer, which included interviews with family, friends and colleagues about his connection to the community.

Afterwards, Sauer, who’s lived in Medicine Hat since 1974 and served as a school board superintendent and alderman, gave his honouree remarks.

“My family has been very, very supportive. When I get involved with something, you can bet your bottom dollar that all of them are involved in some way,” said Sauer, whose wife Jennifer and daughter Valerie were in the audience.

“I’ve said this about 15 times today, ‘It’s better working together than working alone.’”
