Mohawks beat Vikings, win Moose Cup

The Medicine Hat High School Mohawks are Moose Cup Champions.

The team met with the Crescent Heights Vikings Friday night at the Methanex Bowl for the first time this season. The Mohawks came out on top with a 16-1 victory.

“That was a tough game,” said Hat High head coach Quinn Skelton. “We feel pretty good about the win. The boys are pretty excited to come out with the win. I think it was well-deserved and it puts us into first place in league play for the time being, and we won the Moose Cup tonight — it was a big night for us.”

The game started out a crazy one, with multiple fumbles and an interception before either of the teams completed a pass. During the first few minutes the Mohawks were able to create a turnover while on defence. The team was able to run the ball nearly 100 yards for what seemed to be a touchdown, but it was ultimately called back to the 50-yard line because of a flag.

“I think we really needed to settle down off the start,” said Skelton. “Having that called back on us definitely knocked some of the wind out of our sails, but we had to get back and get our focus back — that’s exactly what the boys did.”

Coming off a 14-0 win over the Brooks Buffalos, the Mohawks were hoping the play a strong defensive game against the Vikings. Skelton says he is happy with the effort.

“We needed our defence to come up big tonight and they did,” said Skelton. “The defence came up big. The wind tonight made it hard for us, and it gave us a challenge, but it was nice to see the boys stop a really good team out there in Crescent Heights.”

The Mohawks next game is on the road in Strathmore for their last league game.
