Soccer squads go 2-0 on the road

-

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s soccer team strung together a pair of road victories this weekend to extend their winning streak to four games.

The Rattlers outlasted the Red Deer College Queens 2-0 on Saturday and followed it up with a 1-0 defensive battle against the Lakeland Rustlers to improve their Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference record to 6-1-1 — two points back of the South leading SAIT Trojans.

Shaelyn Holdaway and Rachel Dorais scored eight minutes apart to break open a scoreless stalemate in the final 11 minutes of the match and leave the Queens reeling.

Rattlers goalkeeper Kassidy Suberlak stopped all five shots she faced to lock up a shutout.

Jordyn Bell scored the lone goal in Sunday’s contest, beating Rustlers goalkeeper Danielle Blacklock in the 16th minute for her fifth of the year.

Suberlak stopped four shots to preserve the clean sheet.

Men improve to 5-2-1

Albert Woodroffe-Brown potted a hat trick to lead the Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s soccer team to a resounding 41 win over the Lakeland Rustlers Sunday, capping off an undefeated weekend after a 2-0 win over the Red Deer Kings Sunday.

Woodroffe-Brown opened Sunday’s scoring in the 13th minute off a feed from Jared Ursulan, then struck again 93 seconds later to leave the Rustlers reeling.

The Rattlers forward completed the natural hat trick in the 53rd minute with his second unassisted marker of the day before teammate Colton Pacheco put the game away in the 77th minute to push the Rattlers to 5-2-1 on the season.

Lakeland’s Elijah Jennings managed to beat Rattlers goalkeeper Joao Batista for a consolation marker in stoppage time. Batista recorded two saves in the win.

Ursulan did the heavy lifting in Saturday’s shutout over Red Deer. The Rattlers midfielder finished off a through-ball from Woodroffe-Brown to open the scoring in the 40th minute then struck again in the 78th.

The Rattlers return to the pitch at MHC to host the Olds College Broncos Saturday.
