Medicine Hat MP Glen Motz endorses Jason Kenney to be leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP) as members of the party vote to elect a leader this week.

“I am supporting Jason Kenney for a number of reasons. One, he has an incredible track record in federal politics and as we all know past behaviour is an indication of future behaviour and he is known as a get-things-done sort of fellow,” said Motz.

Kenney left his comfort zone in federal politics to address concerns and dissatisfaction with the current government in Alberta, said Motz. Kenney did not just complain but worked to do something about it. “Against all odds, against the judgement of the establishment of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Alberta, some of them, he showed his capacity and ability to demonstrate to people his leadership,” said Motz.

Kenney was the driving force behind the establishment of the UCP and ultimately achieved 95 per cent support for uniting the Wildrose and PC parties under the UCP banner, said Motz.

“He speaks with great credibility and I’m excited for him to be the next premier of Alberta,” said Motz. “For the future of our province and for the betterment of our own future he’s the logical choice, the only choice.”

Provincial, federal, and to some extent municipal governments work in partnership on a number of fronts, said Motz. Issues to be addressed jointly by Alberta and the federal government include, energy and pipelines, marijuana legislation, health, and interprovincial trade restrictions.

Motz says he has watched Kenney interact with hundreds of people and is aware of his record as a federal minister.

“He was all about building the relationship, building the trust, getting things done cooperatively that I really believe he has the tenacity, he has the ability, the capacity and the personality to be very successful for the betterment of our province,” said Motz. “He listens and if there is a better idea he is not opposed to maybe being flexible and adjusting certain positions.”

There are three candidates for leadership of the UCP. In addition to Kenney, Brian Jean, former leader of the Wildrose party and Doug Schweitzer a Calgary lawyer.

Jean was in Medicine Hat Aug. 15 for a press conference and Schweitzer was interviewed by the News when he visited the Hat Aug. 31.
