The Crescent Heights High School Vikings senior girls’ volleyball team just won’t stop winning.

After a five-set marathon match against Eagle Butte last week, the team made quick work of the Medicine Hat High School Kwahommies, winning in three sets (27-25, 25-23, 25-22).

“We’re really, really excited after the win,” said Vikings head coach Erin Sawicki. “We always have really good and exciting games against Hat High, and this was no different. We played three really close sets, but it’s always great to come out on top.”

The win moves the Vikings to 4-0 on the year, meaning first place is guaranteed for the team and that CHHS will get to host league playoffs.

“Finishing first with these girls is amazing,” she said. “I’ve been here for four years, and we’ve never been able to clinch first. Doing it for the first time feels really great.”

Coming into the game just behind the Vikings, Hat High had a chance to secure first, but now fall to third thanks to an Eagle Butte win over McCoy Tuesday in three sets.

“Crescent Heights plays really well every time we play them,” said Hat High head coach Darren MacMillan. “I don’t think we’ve played them yet this year when they’ve had an off day, they served well, passed well, their setter played well — they all just played really well. They’ve had their way with us this year for sure.”

With one injured Grade 12 player, the Vikings called up a junior player to fill in, and Sawicki says she is proud her team didn’t miss a beat.

“I think we’re just playing as a team right now,” she said. “Everyone that went out tonight had really good touches and played really good volleyball. That always helps bring us together, and it helps that we have great leadership from all of our Grade 12s.”

The teams will be playing in a tournament in Strathmore this weekend.
