Man pleads not guilty charged with trying to mow crowd down in pickup truck

Not-guilty pleas were entered Thursday by a man arrested in August over attempting to run over a crowd of people with a pickup truck following a dispute.

The alleged incident took place in the early morning of Aug. 10, when police received a complaint that a man had tried to run over a crowd of people following a dispute. The incident resulted in one person being dragged several feet and suffering minor injuries. When officers attempted to arrest the man at the front door of a residence, he refused to exit. A warrant for the residence was obtained, and the man was taken into custody without further incident.

Jamie Vorra, 27, was charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, dangerous driving and breach of probation.

Bail denied

Bail was denied Thursday to a man arrested Nov. 1 on drug traffickin­g charges.

The 28-year-old man remains in custody at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre, with his next court appearance set for Nov. 16 to give him time to apply to legal aid for a lawyer.

The accused was arrested at 2 a.m. on Nov. 1, when police conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of Eighth Street SW. Police allege that the man was found to be in breach of release conditions that were in place due to other charges he faces.

When conducting a search of the man and vehicle, police seized 57.75 grams of methamphet­amine with a street value of $6,000, 6.4 grams of ‘crack’ cocaine with a street value of $800, 22.84 grams of marijuana with a street value of $220, and one gram of cannabis resin with a street value of $20.

Also seized were bear spray and a folding knife contraveni­ng a release order for the man to not possess weapons of any kind.

Justin Joseph Yuhas faces two counts of possession for the purpose of traffickin­g, three counts of simple possession, Possession of property obtained by crime, possessing a dangerous weapon, and three breaches.

Lawyer change

A man in custody for drug traffickin­g charges had a brief appearance in court Thursday, with his lawyer coming off the record so a new one could take the case.

Ashley Glendon Gackle, 40, appeared in person for this switch, with his next appearance set for Nov. 9.

Gackle has a trial date set for Jan. 24 over drug traffickin­g charges following an arrest in June. Gackle was arrested again in September and charged again, this time with possessing methamphet­amine for the purpose of traffickin­g. No pleas have yet been entered for this charge.
