SPCA drops adoption fees for ‘Meowvember’ hoping to free up space
Due to reaching “cat-pacity,” the Medicine Hat SPCA is offering 50 per cent off adoption fees for felines from Nov. 6 -19, a promotion dubbed “Meow-vember.”
Hat SPCA executive director Katie Ayres said the shelter needs to free up some space due to impending renovations, so they’re looking to put between 60 and 80 cats and kittens up for adoption.
“With our renovations coming up, which we’re planning to begin in January, we need to reduce our cat population by a good 50 per cent,” she said.
“We pretty much never do 50 per cent off adopting fees. We want to get the shelter as cleared out as possible in anticipation of our renovations starting, because they’re beginning in our cat-holding area and that area won’t be accessible at all for two to three months.
“We’re planning to utilize the current area that we use for dogs for cats, but it will significantly decrease the number of cats we can actually have back there.
“Dogs, we’re planning to put either straight into adoption or into foster care, because we receive quite a few less dogs than we do cats, so it’s more manageable to do that.”
There’s a plan B in case they can’t set up as many cats as they need with adoptees.
In that event, they will try and send as many as they can to other rescue groups or put some into foster homes while renovations occur.
Since other local rescue groups are similarly constrained for space, cats would have to be sent to Calgary.
Adoption fees are typically $120 for an adult cat and $160 for a kitten, so they will be $60 and $80 respectively for the next couple of weeks.
