Mohawks top Cougars in Tier II final

-

Catholic Central Cougars had their chances, but turnovers and penalties proved costly as they fell 15-4 to Medicine Hat High Mohawks in the Region 1 Tier II final Tuesday night at University of Lethbridge Stadium.

Mohawks built an 8-0 lead after the first quarter. They opened the scoring when Lockland Hardiker missed a 21-yard field goal for a single.

The Hat High defence then came up big as they recovered a Cougars fumble and Tanner Winter ran it in for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, making it 7-0.

Late in the first quarter, punter Josh Howe made it 8-0 with a 53-yard single.

Catholic Central got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 27-yard single on a missed field goal by Will Hughes after a drive stalled.

CCH then had a chance to tie the game when Mateus Griffo intercepted a pass deep in Medicine Hat territory and, after a Medicine Hat penalty, had the ball first and goal on the 1-yard line. However, Cougars couldn’t punch it in and eventually settled for a 19-yard field goal by Hughes.

The Mohawks put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when CCH turned the ball over on downs at the Cougar 10. The Mohawks scored on a strange play when Winter fumbled near the goal line, but the ball went directly to Hardiker, who went in from one yard out for the major. He also added the convert to round out the scoring.

The Mohawks will travel to Okotoks on Saturday afternoon to play the Foothills Composite Falcons in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Tier II quarterfinals.
