Cubs win at home, lose on the road this weekend

-

The Medicine Hat Cubs are slowly getting back on track after dropping five straight games in November.

Heading into the weekend, the Cubs were sitting at a record of 7-12-0, which placed them last in their division.

The team had two opportunities this weekend to make up a bit of ground in the standings with a home game Saturday and a road game Sunday.

Hosting a strong Blackfalds team Saturday at the Kinplex, the Cubs were able to get an early lead and hold into it, coming away with a 2-1 win.

The Cubs struck early in the first on a goal from Kian Simonson at 17:05 in the period, and were able to add to the lead 10 minutes later on a goal from Matt Clement. Joshua Schafer assisted the first goal, while Quinten Karg assisted the second goal.

The Cubs held on to a 2-0 lead through two periods, but Blackfalds was able to score a power-play marker in the third to bring the game within one goal.

Cubs goalie Martyn Clift had a very busy night, but was able to stop 47 of 48 pucks fired his way to secure a win for Medicine Hat.

Clift was given first star of the game.

Sunday did not go well for the Cubs. Facing a tough Okotoks Bisons squad, the Cubs were unable to generate offence throughout the majority of the game and fell 6-1.

Joshua Schafer scored the only Cubs goal that was assisted by Quinten Karg and Matt Clement.

Josh Breznik was in goal and stopped 50 of 56 shots faced.

The Cubs next game is 8:45 p.m. Saturday at home against Strathmore.
