– Rogers buys CJCY

A radio station in Medicine Hat is joining a national chain after being sold by its regional parent company.

Rogers Media announced on Tuesday afternoon it has acquired local station 102.1 CJCY from Lethbridge-based Clear Sky Radio. It will join Rock 105.3-FM as a second Rogers outlet in the area.

Terms for the deal were not disclosed. It is subject to approval by the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission and could close “in the coming months,” according to a release.

Rogers’s radio portfolio consists of 55 stations across Canada, including 14 in Alberta.

Company officials stated that CJCY has a strong listener base and is a good fit for the company.

Julie Adam, a senior vicepresident with Rogers, said the acquisition allows the company to increasingly “offer high quality local programming across multiple platforms to listeners, and better serve the community."

Clear Sky operates two stations in Lethbridge and one in Cranbrook, B.C.

Paul Larsen, the president of Clear Sky Radio, said he is proud of the quality the station has provided over almost 10 years.

"With Rogers's reputation for delivering the highest quality radio services, (the sale) will provide significant benefits to the community, our employees, listeners and clients," Larsen said in the release.

CJCY began broadcasting in 2008 and serves Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Seven Persons and Bow Island.

Rogers’ 105.3 CKMH also first went on the air in early 2008.
