The Medicine Hat Pride Association is still unsure if a pride themed and painted crosswalk will find its way to Medicine Hat.

Former Pride chairman Rosie Joa told the News in an interview last summer that the local Pride Association would be working with the city to set up a rainbow crosswalk in the city.

With Joa stepping down recently and Becki Korhonen stepping in as the new chair, Korhonen says Medicine Hat Pride would love to see a rainbow crosswalk in the city, but knows there are obstacles.

“At this point we really don’t know if or when it will happen,” Korhonen told the News. “The crosswalk is something that would be really nice to have, but you have to consider what has happened in Taber and Lethbridge. I would say that, as far as city vandalism is concerned, I think the city may worry about damaged property, and I think that is their concern and we totally get that.”

With seven Pride in the Park celebrations under the local pride group’s belt, Korhonen says there is still plenty of work the group wants to see done.

“The crosswalk is something we’re working towards, but we may not be there yet,” she said. “We don’t have a parade here yet, but we need to keep working forward and to continue on working on becoming more united — we just need to understand and respect everyone else.”
