Pens, Mission off to provincials

-

Provincials are on the menu for two more Medicine Hat ringette teams following a successful weekend of playdowns.

The Penguins went 3-0 in under-19 A playdowns in Calgary, though none of the victories were blowouts.

Against Calgary’s Mavericks, Medicine Hat came from behind in a 4-2 win with all their goals in the second half. Alexandra Stanke had two while Lauren Hughes and Lauren Klick added the others.

Again trailing at the intermission to Calgary Red, the Penguins upped their level en route to a 5-4 win. Klick had a pair, with Stanke, Hughes and Jenna McDonnell potting the others.

Finally, a 5-3 win Saturday over Bow View Fury clinched the spot. Hughes’ hat trick and singles from McDonnell and Klick provided the scoring, though 13 Fury penalties were a big part of the story too.

Medicine Hat now gets to prepare for provincials, March 2-4 in Leduc.

Under-16

Joining the Pens in Leduc the same weekend next month are the Mission under-16 A squad, who had a similar storyline — at least in the early going of their playdowns.

Trailing the Bow View Rage 5-1 in their opener at Calgary, Medicine Hat somehow earned a 6-6 draw. Amanda Robinson had two goals while Ashylyn Seale, Maggie Carrier and Sheridyn Herman had the others.

The energy from that comeback carried on in a 9-1 win over Calgary’s X team. Allison Mason had four goals while Herman, Jada Harper, Bree Becker, Megan Taylor and Kennedy Lanigan scored as well.

Finally, Mission beat Calgary Force 4-3 in a game highlighted by the goaltending duo of Mikaela Claypool and Sydney Carlson.

“Our Mission team is ready for the compete level at U16A provincials,” said coach Marty Robinson in a press release. “Our girls are fast, strong and ready to take it to another level in Leduc March 2-4.

“Our goaltending duo is the strongest in the province that we have seen.”

Herman, Robinson, Harper and Stephanie Stroh scored on Force.

Under-14

Their under-14 B playdowns aren’t for another 10 days, but you’ve got to think the Rogue have a good shot.

The Hat team finished their regular season 15-1-0 thanks to two blowout wins this past weekend. They beat Calgary NRG 10-2 and Calgary Aftershock 8-0, earning a top seed at playdowns Feb. 24 and 25.

Jaelyn Seiwert had four goals against NRG, Joren Gramlich had three while Jena Harty, Hailey Sanders, Jessica Heidel and Kylee Waldegger had singles.

Rheaghyn Heinrich registered her fifth shutout of the season in the win over Aftershock. Gramlich and Harty scored two each while Heidel, Waldegger, Hailey Hudson and affiliate player Pacie Harper added the others.
