Nitrous oxide tanks hit the highway after semi rollover near Oyen

Tanks full of liquid nitrous oxide were scattered across the highway near Oyen following a single-vehicle rollover on Feb. 25.

Oyen RCMP report they responded to the incident at approximat­ely 4 p.m., on Highway 9 near Range Road 43.

A semi-truck was travelling west bound on Highway 9 when it rolled. The truck was carrying liquid nitrous oxide tanks, with some empty while others full. These tanks scattered across the highway, while the truck was leaking diesel fuel.

The cause of the rollover is unknown at this time and is still under investigat­ion. The lone occupant of the truck was uninjured.

Oyen and Cereal fire assisted the Oyen RCMP with the collision and clean up., with traffic rerouted for multiple hours.

Police said there was no danger to the public.

Fatal collision

One person is dead following a motor vehicle collision on Feb. 23 on Highway 3 in Coaldale.

Coaldale RCMP along with the Coaldale Fire Department/EMS responded to the collision at 4 p.m., which occurred on the highway at the Broxburn intersecti­on

A 47-year-old female driver of a grey Volkswagen Jetta along with a female passenger were heading eastbound on Highway 3. At the time the winds were blowing hard, visibility was poor with blowing snow. The road surface was icy with the blowing snow. As the Jetta approached the Broxburn intersecti­on the driver tried to slow down but was unable to and slammed in to a semi truck hauling a flatbed trailer stopped at the intersecti­on.

At the time of the collision the intersecti­on had functionin­g traffic lights.

The 43-year-old female passenger was trapped in the car.

Coaldale Fire Department members extricated her and she was transporte­d to the Chinook Regional Hospital where she eventually passed away due to her serious injuries.

The driver of the Jetta and the lone occupant of the stopped semi truck were not injured.
