Council defeats member’s motion for Redcliff recycling drop-off site
It just wouldn’t be a 2018 Redcliff council meeting with some talk of recycling.
Town council met for the first time this month Monday night, and was able to fly through its agenda in roughly 30 minutes.
Coun. Larry Leipert put forth a motion for council to vote regarding a potential recycling drop-off location in the town, something discussed prior to council voting against curbside recycling.
“I would like to have an item put on the agenda,” Leipert said in a letter to municipal manager Arlos Crofts, “to have Administration look into setting up a transfer site for recyclables. The site would have video surveillance to deter misuse and a sense of security for the users, be well lit, easily accessible and fenced to contain any material which may blow away.”
After reading the letter, council discussed the possibility of a transfer site.
“This is what people are telling me they want,” Leipert told council.
“This is a dinosaur,” said Mayor Dwight Kilpatrick. “Communities everywhere are moving away from this exact idea.”
“We’ve looked at this before,” said Coun. Cathy Crozier. “Are we really going to make administration look at this idea again?”
After the brief discussion, the motion put forth by Leipert was voted against 5-2, with only Coun. Shawna Cockle joining Leipert to vote in favour.
Earlier in the meeting, council discussed the legalization of marijuana and changes the town may have to make once it is legalized.
As the town is still accepting surveys on the matter until the end of the month, and holding two open house discussions, not much was said during the meeting on the matter.
Council did quickly discuss the possible need for a new smoking bylaw if that’s what people want in the community.
The open houses will be Thursday and then March 20 from 3-7 p.m. at town hall.
Council will meet again March 26.
