Skateboard association collecting prom dresses before trip to Mexico
Group hopes dress donations will help young Mexican women celebrate traditional Quinceañera in style
The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association is getting ready to embark on a trip of a lifetime.
Before the group heads down to Mexico to renovate some buildings, they are hoping to take roughly 60 prom dresses to give to young Mexican women to help them celebrate Quinceañera, an event that marks the beginning of adulthood.
“Today we’re at The Summit and we’re asking the community to bring in some prom dresses that they may not need,” said group member Davie James. “We’re heading down to Mexico pretty soon, and the group we’re working with actually sent us this as a last-minute request.
“Now we’re reaching out to Medicine Hat to see if we can make this happen from some women in Mexico.”
Within the first couple hours of collecting dresses the group had roughly 30, but James says the group will keep collecting them no matter what.
“This was pretty last minute, so we’re still working out how we’ll get them down there,” he said. “We’re looking at 60 dresses, but if we get more, I’m sure we’ll make it work. We’re busing down there pretty soon, so we’ll have to load the dresses up and make it work.”
The group of more than 30 skaters is made up of mostly young men, but a handful of women will make the trip to Ensenada as well.
“There’s a lot of guys going on this trip, so this is a bit out of our ball park,” said James. “We don’t know all that much about prom dresses, so we’re learning as we go here. We’ve got some girls in the group helping us out, and making sure we know what we need to know about the dresses.”
