Community supports help those with Down Syndrome thrive

- PEGGY REVELL

Atkinson has stepped away from playing the bumbling character for the time being.

But aside from superheroes and comedy, Marchand likes to keep busy and give back to community.

He’s a part of CORE’s “Kids on the Block” puppet program, where they travel to local schools and perform with puppets.

“We do good there,” he said about the chance to share with children an anti-bullying message, and a positive message about people with disabilities.

He volunteers at the hospital twice a week to deliver mail, and once a week at CORE’s activity centre to teach sign language to his peers.

He even has a job — one he says he enjoys very much — taking out the garbage, sweeping and vacuuming at the nearby HR Solutions.

Many in the community may recognize his smiling face as he’s worked at the giant chessboard downtown during the warmer months.

He stays active and busy with CORE through bowling, swimming and hanging out with friends.

Marchand will also be representing Medicine Hat in bowling at the Special Olympics in Edmonton this weekend.

Next up on his plate? He’s learning how to prepare and cook food.

“My favourite meal is rice, and lamb chops and potatoes,” he said, quickly adding to the list hamburgers, french fries and more — he hopes he can learn how to make these meals for his family.
