Charity event set for April 21 at FLC to benefit Humboldt

-

A charity event for the Humboldt Broncos will take place at the Family Leisure Centre Saturday, April 21, yet another way Hatters are banding together in the wake of the tragedy that befell the junior hockey team this past Friday.

Nick Kush’s family is organizing the event, which will include a free public skate, a game, a silent auction and more.

Most important, every penny raised will go to the Broncos.

“My parents are both smalltown Saskatchewan people, Medicine Hat’s such a strong hockey community that we were just sitting around thinking what can we do to help?” said Kush, a self-described beer league player. “Donating money is awesome but is there something that can really show that we care.”

Kush’s family has friends in Humboldt who they contacted after hearing the grim news of Friday’s bus crash. He’s not sure who will play in the game yet but has some feelers out to local celebrities. The free skate will go from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., followed by a ceremony and then the charity game itself.

Anyone interested in helping or able to round up some silent auction items can email Kush at nickrkush@gmail.com.

All money raised, along with a giant 20-foot banner that everyone in attendance will be able to sign, will be taken to Humboldt by Kush himself.

“There’s got to be some way that I can help and show that I’m with Humboldt, you know? That’s what we wanted to show, and we thought what better way than a charity hockey game,” he said.

“We’re going to make it a good afternoon.”
