A six-month jail sentence was handed down Wednesday over an assault outside a bar in 2015 that partially blinded the victim.

Kirsten Campbell pled guilty to aggravated assault, while her sister Kayla Campbell pled guilty to assault over the incident that occurred outside the Mainlander Pub on Nov. 8., 2015.

According to the agreed statement of facts, the 42-yearold victim was working as a DJ at the bar, and had come outside. She heard glass shattering near her vehicle and went to confront a group of people she observed near her vehicle. She was pushed to the ground by a third party, followed by the sisters being on top of her, punching her.

Kayla, 29, landed a few punches, but there were no injuries as a result of this. She was sentenced to one year probation.

Kirsten was sentenced to six months jail time, as the 27year-old put her thumb into the victim’s eye and ruptured the eye globe.

It was a “very severe injury” said the Crown prosecutor, with the woman left blind in one eye.

The victim did have her hands on Kirsten’s hair and wouldn’t let go.

Upon arrest, the court heard the pair confessed and expressed remorse over the injuries and what took place to police right away.

Defence counsel for Kirsten said there were elements of self defence — particularly at the beginning of the altercation — but not in a way that would qualify as a legal defence.

The court heard that the women were out celebrating Kayla’s birthday. She had drank a “ridiculous amount of alcohol” — even having to be carried from one establishment to the next. She thought she was helping her sister.

Victim impact statements entered as exhibits, and read by the accused.

Neither has a criminal record.
