Jays bats get the job done with eighth-inning rally to beat Mariners

TORONTO Josh Donaldson, Yangervis Solarte and Justin Smoak hit three consecutiv­e doubles in a four-run eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo homer in the fourth inning before Toronto (20-17) broke the game open in the eighth.

Jaime Garcia (2-2) struck out three and gave up two runs — one earned — in five innings of work. Seunghwan Oh, John Axford and Ryan Tepera all pitched a scoreless inning, with the latter earning the win as the pitcher of record when the Blue Jays bats came alive.

Tyler Clippard earned his first save of the season, striking out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin started at third base, making a rare appearance as all-star third baseman Josh Donaldson was the designated hitter in an effort to rest his throwing arm.

Also, shortstops Aledmys Diaz (left ankle) and Troy Tulowitzki (right ankle) are both on the disabled list, and struggling second baseman Devon Travis is in tripleA while he tries to get his groove back.

PHILADELPH­IA — Carlos Santana had three hits and five RBIs, Nick Pivetta struck out seven in five scoreless innings and the Philadelph­ia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer and the Atlanta Braves set a franchise record for consecutiv­e shutout innings on the road in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Wilson Ramos’ two-run single with two outs in the eighth ended a string of 34 straight shutout innings for the Braves, who won for the seventh straight time on the road.

BALTIMORE — Mark Trumbo delivered a tiebreakin­g two-run single in the eighth inning, Chris Davis homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals to end a seven-game losing streak.

CHICAGO — Kris Bryant hit his 100th career homer, Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell connected in an eight-run third inning, and Chicago routed Miami.

DENVER — Rene Rivera homered with a sore right hand, Jaime Barria threw efficientl­y into the sixth inning and the Angels ended Colorado’s six-game winning streak.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Nomar Mazara led off the 10th inning with his second homer of the game, giving Texas its first winning home series this season.

CHICAGO — Colin Moran hit a two-run homer that capped a four-run rally against Nate Jones in the ninth inning, and Pittsburgh sent the White Sox to their fifth straight loss.
