For those who don’t want to wake up in the early hours of Saturday morning to catch the royal wedding — the Medicine Hat Public Library has you covered.

The public library will be hosting a free event Saturday morning starting at 10:30 to help Hatters celebrate the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“We’re excited to be showing the royal wedding in our theatre this weekend,” said head of marketing services Gillian Reimer. “We’re encouraging people to come in their fanciest wedding attire that’s fit for the Queen.

“We want people to come out in ball gowns, hats, elbowlength gloves, and we’ll all watch the wedding together. Then we’ll have a high tea after with tea and scones.”

After the group is done watching the wedding, the public library will be holding a story time event for young kids.

“It’s going to be a royal story time,” said Reimer. “Kids aged three to six are welcome to come out to that part of the day, and they’ll also get their own tea party.

“We’re asking people to register for the afternoon kids’ event, so people can just give us a call here.”

Reimer says showing the wedding is important to the public library for a few reasons.

“Not everyone has cable at home, or the ability to watch when it’s live,” she said. “This is also just a really fun way to watch something like this.

“Getting together with a bunch of people you may not know that have the same interests can always be fun, so we’re welcoming everyone.”

The event will be held in the newly-renovated theatre, which has been a big hit for the public library so far.

“It’s been great,” said Reimer. “We’re noticing more people are coming out to events, and we’ve had great feedback on the theatre.

“There’s not really a theatre like it in the city, so we’re really excited to have it.”
