Photographer wins national award
Schae Philpott wins award from Professional Photographers of Canada for wedding photo
A local photographer recently brought home some national hardware for a wedding photo she took while on the job.
The picture is titled ‘A Father's Love’ and portrays a man and his daughter sharing a dance at the bride’s wedding.
Schae Philpott was awarded the Best in Class award at the Professional Photographers of Canada’s 2018 annual competition; a national exhibition celebrating the best of Canadian professional photography. It was also selected for inclusion in the Professional Photographers of Canada’s 2018 Loan Collection.
“Last year I got accredited by the Professional Photographers of Canada by submitting 10 photos to them, and after a panel of judges reviewed them and I am now accredited,” she said. “I was then able to enter the National Image Salon this year, so I decided to enter a photo.
“Eventually the photo was accepted into the Salon, which is a large photo exhibition. The photo was marked and stood out among the rest. Then at the gallery it was entered in, it was judged again, and it was marked as best in class.”
Philpott says she had no hopes for her photo to make it this far, but is happy that people are enjoying the visual.
“I didn’t expect this at all,” she said. “Because I’m still new to this organization, I just trusted my gut and sent the photo it.”
Philpott says the photo captures a lot of emotion.
“This happened at a wedding last year, and it happened during the first dance with the bride and her father,” she said. “Obviously, there’s a lot of emotion there, with a man seeing his daughter becoming a wife.
“Capturing things like this is why I do what I do — I love to capture moments like this.”
