Wyrostok has great work ethic

- Cory Coehoorn

In this edition of Coehoorn’s Corner, I would like to highlight another one of our amazing athletes; Caleb Wyrostok is a local hockey player who has a lot of determination and a plethora of talent to go with it!

I love to brag about our Athlete Enhancement Program members, and Caleb makes it very easy to do so.

Caleb played with the South East Alberta Club bantam AAA Tigers hockey team last year. Most recently, he was drafted into the Western Hockey League by the Swift Current Broncos. The fact that Caleb was drafted has a lot to do with his talent, but more to do with his work ethic. He consistently shows up to our 6:30 a.m. training sessions and works hard while he is there. He also recently signed up for our hockey specific summer training program. It is a pleasure to work with athletes like Caleb, because they are intrinsically motivated to be their best.

This type of determination is very rare. The reality is that you can try your hardest as a coach to urge your athletes to have the tenacity that Caleb has, but this is a passion deep within an athlete that very few have. It is the passion to want something so bad that you are willing to do anything necessary to accomplish it.

The Alberta Sport Development Centre – Southeast is full of athletes who have a similar determination to that of Caleb. We have plenty of athletes who show up to our sessions regardless of the barriers that may inhibit them from getting there.

This is why it is easy to brag about our athletes because they do things on a daily basis that amaze me, and they really are great emerging athletes with so much potential and a bright future ahead of them.

Our AEP program runs from Sept. 1 to May 31 each year. We accept 30 athletes each year, and next year’s applications are due on Aug. 5. This date is fast approaching, so if you are an emerging athlete (13-18 years old) and are intrinsically motivated like Caleb is please fill out an AEP application form at mhc.ab.ca/ASDCSE.

Cory Coehoorn is the coordinator of the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Southeast, and he would love to chat with you more about the programs that they offer. He can be reached via phone at 403504-3547 or via email at ccoehoorn@mhc.ab.ca.
