A well known volunteer in the city recently received one of the highest honours a volunteer can be given.

Last week Donna Serr was given the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers from Canada’s Governor General for her 13 years of work with the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

“It’s an incredible honour to win such an amazing award,” she said. “Getting an award for just doing what your heart loves is incredible — this work really is what I love to do.

“There’s no greater sense of joy in your heart than reaching out and helping someone in need. I’m just so blessed to be able to help children have their dreams come true.”

Serr got involved with Children’s Wish after her daughter was diagnosed with cancer and had her wish come true. She says the organization changed her life.

“Children’s Wish came into our lives when we really needed it,” she said. “We had a daughter who had a cancerous brain tumour, and they told her she could have whatever she wanted.

“After that experience, I knew I wanted to be a part of this and made sure I could help families in this community.”

Serr says she encourages everyone to get out and help in whatever way they can in their community.

“There’s so many needs in our community,” she said. “Whether it’s helping a child have their wish come true or helping a single parent out, or helping someone with a drug addiction — every little thing people can do to help out makes a big difference in the grand scheme of things.”
