Time to register is now for Southern Games
It’s down to crunch time for anyone wanting to register for the Southern Alberta Summer Games.
With the deadline to enter set for Friday, both Medicine Hat and Cypress County team organizers are sounding the alarm that there will be no extended deadline this year.
“Friday until the (Family Leisure Centre) is closed is when I can take registrations,” said Medicine Hat regional director Jenny Styner. “I’m expecting to be opening the floodgates Thursday afternoon and staying here through the weekend (to process everything).”
It’s a similar situation for Matt Van Der Sloot, Cypress’ director. He’s a bit surprised there hasn’t been any registrants in some of the Games’ new sports such as rugby and motocross.
“We wish we’d see more there, bowling as well,” said Van Der Sloot.
The annual Games take place July 4-7 in Taber, though that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve got to spend the whole four days there. Many events like track and field and cycling happen on one or two days depending on which specific disciplines you choose. There are three, five and 10kilometre runs as well.
Billed as a multi-sport games for anybody regardless of age, the Southern Alberta Summer Games have become a family event for many and a chance for those no longer in a competitive mindset to go for something different once a year. On the other hand, it’s been a spectacular springboard for athletes looking to take their game to the next level.
From equestrian to cribbage, beach volleyball and small bore shooting, the Games have something for everyone. There’s even a photography competition, which you still need to register for prior to the submission deadline itself.
Medicine Hat participants can call Styner at 403-525-8903 or find her office at the Family Leisure Centre. Van Der Sloot is at the Cypress County office and can be reached by phone at 403-525-2315.
