Midget, peewee Sun Devils win tourneys

Multiple Medicine Hat lacrosse teams won tournament titles this past weekend, the perfect lead-in to their home event this weekend.

Both the midget and peewee Sun Devils went undefeated in claiming trophies in Strathmore and Innisfail, respective­ly. They’ll be among seven host teams at the annual Lax to the Max which kicks off Friday at the Kinplex at Hockey Hounds arenas.

At Strathmore, the midget Devils won their second tournament in a row in typically dominant fashion. They beat Strathmore 10-3, Sylvan Lake 61and Kneehill 9-1 to advance to Sunday’s final, a rematch with Sylvan Lake.

The Buccaneers put up a better fight, actually leading 2-1 after one period, but a four-goal Medicine Hat onslaught in the second punctuated the 5-2 win.

Cameron Jackle, Lyndon Milnthorpe, Bryson Helmle, Quinn Canadine and Zachary McBride scored, while Lincoln Koberinski didn’t let anything past him in goal for the final 48-plus minutes.

Peewee

At Innisfail, the peewee Devils wound up a tidy 4-0 record with a 6-3 win over Sherwood Park in the championsh­ip game.

Madden Kelly was named MVP of the Sprit of the Stix tournament, including the team’s heart and hustle award in a 9-3 win over Beaumont. Brooklynne Painter took the heart and hustle award in the final.

Other scores were 4-1 over Innisfail (Daine Mattson with heart and hustle) and 16-3 over Fort Saskatchew­an (Hudson Gainer with heart and hustle).

Medicine Hat has two peewee teams in their Lax to the Max event. The other team had league games Saturday in Lethbridge, winning 9-7 and 10-0 over the host squads. Torin Thickson had a hat trick in the 9-7 win, with Josh Evaschesen and Silas Swan each netting a pair. Evaschesen had four and Thickson three in the other game, while Jaxon Buscholl earned the rare shutout.

Bantam

As for the bantam Sun Devils, each of Medicine Hat’s teams played a pair of league games Saturday on the road.

One Devils squad split a doublehead­er in Lethbridge, losing 10-5 to the hosts before beating Crowsnest Pass 10-2.

Tyler Broesky and Jayden Richards each scored a pair, with Aden Nevil adding the other in the loss. Broesky and Richards each had three in the win, while Brennin Wereley had two. Houston Eakins and Carter Schnuth each scored once.

The other Devils team demolished Lethbridge’s other side 20-1, getting five goals from Josh Drefs, four from Carter Hyland and three each from Matthew MacPherson and Race Anderson. But they dropped a 13-5 decision to Brooks despite a pair from MacPherson.

Both bantam Devils are in the home tournament this weekend.

Tyke

One of the youngest lacrosse age groups saw a team hit the road for some fun competitio­n Saturday.

The tyke Sun Devils earned a pair of wins in Rosemary, 85 over Brooks and 10-0 over Nanton.

Carter Jarvis had five goals in the first game and two in the second. Carter Gilchrist had one in the first and four in the second. Ryker Pinter had a pair in the second game, Sam Marshall played goal in the first and scored in the second. Maxwell WIlliams, Brayden Knight and Hudson Gilchrist also scored. Jonathon Knight got the win in net in the shutout.
