The Medicine Hat Public Library is giving Hatters the chance to get a few new reads in this summer without the hassle of buying or signing out new books.

“Our paperback exchange has been running for the past few summers and it’s back up for the year,” said head of marketing services Gillian Reimer. “We allow people to bring in their old paperbacks and exchange them at the library for some new, used ones.

“It’s a great way for people to get a few new things to read over the summer without any sort of hassles.”

The program runs until the end of August, and encourages people to take exactly the amount of books they are leaving.

“We want people to take and leave books in good condition,” said Reimer. “It’s only fair that people can come in and get a book that’s in good condition.

“We also want people to take as many books as they leave, so they shelves can always have a fresh supply on them.”

Reimer says people really enjoy the yearly program for a number of reasons.

“It’s great for people who travel during the summer months and don’t want to have to worry about return dates or late fees,” she said. “It’s also great for people who want to sit poolside and don’t want to have to worry about getting the pages a little wet.

“It makes reading new things a lot easier for people who may not be around for any reason.”

Reimer says the program is a yearly hit.

“It’s very well used,” she said. “We’re constantly filling it and refilling it.

“People are great at bringing in new content to update the display, so the shelves are always fresh.”
