Mavs push streak to 10
The Medicine Hat Mavericks pushed their streak into double digits with a 15-2 blowout victory over the Fort McMurray Giants on Sunday afternoon at Athletic Park.
While Saturday’s road game against the Okotoks Dawgs was snuffed out by a rain delay, the Mavs picked things up back at home Sunday and extended their streak into double digit territory thanks to some lively bats and another strong outing from starting arm Jared Libke.
The Saskatoon product held Fort McMurray to two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts through seven innings of work to lock up the victory and push his record to 2-1 on the year while helping his Mavericks improve to 10-2.
Five Mavericks finished with 2 RBI on the afternoon while five also recorded multiple hits in the game.
Right fielder Jaxson Hooge closed out his game at 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, while Julien Ly and David Vilches both matched Hooge’s production while going 2-for-3 at the dish.
Plate discipline also played a role in Sunday’s lopsided win, as the Mavericks forced 17 walks from Giants pitchers through the afternoon while adding 10 hits.
Giants starting pitcher Chase Partain was handed the loss after being touched up for five runs on three hits through the first 1 and 1/3 innings. Fort McMurray leaned on six more arms to get them out of the afternoon.
Liam Rihela batted in both of Fort McMurray’s runs with a 2 RBI single in the third inning.
Junior Pimentel and Connor Green combined to close out the game with a pair of clean innings.
The Mavericks head to Edmonton tonight to take on the Prospects at 7:05 p.m.
