Mexico shocks Germany, Switzerlan­d ties Brazil in World Cup stunners

MOSCOW Germany became the third defending champion in the last 16 years to lose its opening match at the World Cup, falling to Mexico 1-0 Sunday.

Hirving Lozano scored the lone goal in the 35th minute, picking up Javier Hernandez’s pass inside the penalty area and beating Mesut Ozil before shooting past Manuel Neuer from 10 yards.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia — Brazil joined the list of big teams struggling to win their opening matches at the World Cup in Russia.

The five-time champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerlan­d on Sunday, a few hours after four-time champion Germany was beaten by Mexico 1-0.

Philippe Coutinho gave Brazil the lead in the 20th minute with a volley that bounced in off the right post. Steven Zuber then headed in the equalizer in the 50th. Mexican referee Cesar Ramos dismissed complaints that Zuber had shoved defender Miranda before getting to the corner from Xherdan Shaqiri.

SAMARA, Russia — Aleksandar Kolarov scored from a left-footed free kick in the 56th minute and Serbia opened its World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica on Sunday.

KALININGRA­D, Russia — Luka Modric set up one goal and scored another from the penalty spot Saturday to give Croatia a 2-0 win over Nigeria at the World Cup.

ICELAND 1, ARGENTINA 1

MOSCOW — Lionel Messi had a penalty kick saved and Iceland held on for a 1-1 draw against Argentina at the World Cup on Saturday. Messi failed to give his team the lead when his 64th-minute penalty was stopped by Hannes Halldorsso­n. The Iceland goalkeeper dived to his right and got two hands behind the ball.

DENMARK 1, PERU 0

SARANSK, Russia — Kasper Schmeichel’s slew of saves made Yussuf Poulsen’s opportunis­tic second-half goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over Peru on Saturday at the World Cup.

The victory gave Denmark a crucial advantage in Group C, in which France defeated Australia 2-1 earlier in the day.

FRANCE 2, AUSTRALIA 1

KAZAN, Russia — Technology twice helped France at the World Cup on Saturday in its 2-1 victory over Australia.

The French team was given a penalty kick, eventually converted by Antoine Griezmann in the 58th minute, after the referee watched the replay of a foul on the sideline.
