Great results for track athletes at Calgary meet

Track and field season continued for Medicine Hat and area athletes affiliated with one of the region’s club teams at the huge Caltaf Classic in Calgary this past weekend.

Unsurprisingly, many of them wound up on the podium, some with numerous medals.

Josh Suelzle won both discus (with a 39.40-metre hurl) and shot put (13.79 metres) in his youth (16and 17-year-old) boys division.

Panthers teammate Landon Swartz was the open men’s (18-over) champ in 3,000 metre, crossing in 9:23.67.

And in midget boys (1415), Dylan Callan’s 12.53metre effort was good as gold.

There were 30 Panthers singlets to be found over the course of the two-day meet, plus 16 from the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs also sent three members to the top of the podium, led by Elic Ayomanor. He won midget boys triple jump with a huge 12.56-metre effort, then was third in long jump with 5.65 metres. He won the 100 and 200 metre sprints in 11.48 and 23.28 seconds, respectively.

Jayel Dovichak won girls midget high jump by clearing 1.55 metres, and Navarra Houldin won a women’s open 200 metre wheelchair race in 1:00.34.

Other Bulldogs to podium were Madison KaneRissling — who had a strong triple jump of 10.30 metres, good for third among the women’s open division — and Kiana Farrell (third in youth girls 400 metre hurdles in 1:15.30).

Panthers to podium included Kyle Spackman (second in open men’s pole vault, 3.20 metres), Clark Campbell (third in bantam boys shot put, 8.72 metres), Adriene Campbell (third in peewee girls shot put, 7.13 metres), Darryl Smith (second in masters men’s 800, 2:34.78) and Brent Friesen (second in masters men’ shot put, 9.51 metres).
