Knights gearing up for home tourney

The Medicine Hat K of C Knights will welcome teams from across Alberta and Saskatchew­an as hosts of the UCT A American Legion Basbeall Tournament at Jeffries Field and Athletic Park.

The Knights will take to the diamond for tonight’s main event at 7:30 p.m. against the St. Albert Cardinals at Athletic Park. While they won’t be able to climb the conference standings, Knights pitcher Jaden Schwindt says it’ll be a great opportunit­y to build up some steam heading into July.

“We can just use it to keep going, keep the momentum going,” said Schwindt, whose Knights will battle through the group stage as part of the Red Division. “Just work hard and succeed.”

The UCT tournament kicks off with Blue Division action at 5 p.m., with the Fort Macleod Royals taking on the Camrose Cougars at Jeffries Field and the Calgary Redbirds facing off against the Parkland Expos at Athletic Park.

The Red Division’s Moose Jaw Canucks will meet up with the Calgary Blues at Jeffries Field to open their tournament at 7:30 p.m.

Round robin action continues Saturday with games at 9:30 a.m., noon, 2:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Jeffries Field and Athletic Park. The Knights host the Blues at noon and the Canucks at 5:30 p.m., both at Athletic Park.

The top two squads from each division will advance into the Sunday’s semifinals, slated for 9 a.m. at McCoy Field and Jeffries Field. Both winner will move on to the 2:30 p.m. championsh­ip game at Jeffries.

Consolatio­n between third and fourth place teams are schedule for 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

The Knights hold a 6-15 record on the A American Legion Baseball season with 12 games left on the docket before postseason.
