We deserve better from MHC
Medicine Hat College has not been adequately or fully satisfying the post-secondary needs of our community and has for an extended period of time been operating in crisis mode. This has necessarily led to many deficiencies in spite of the good intentions of those directly involved.
The fact is that the college is a major public employer in Medicine Hat and an important spender of public/private funds. It consists of a few hundred employees in academics, administrative and related support that should have as a primary concern the servicing of a few thousand students. The objective should be to provide the best possible quality of post-secondary education products to the students community at a cost we can afford. Therefore what happens at the college should concern many citizens of this city and its wider community.
In many instances the college has simply been adding layers of management in the hope to improve specific situations. Instead this has resulted in cumbersome and inadequate lines of communication within the organization and has made the delivery of the product more remote and impersonal.
There are a number of methods to improve and effectively achieve more direct communications and understanding and shorten lines of communication resulting in an improved promotion of scholarship and service to the student community at all levels, irrespective of individual circumstances, preferences and/or political orientation.
It is hoped this brief constructive critique will spark more of an exchange of ideas and positive second thoughts resulting in a wider input from those members of the community who feel we deserve and can do better at our college.
