Cervantes shuts down Red Sox

An extra day’s rest in Regina worked wonders for the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

After their Tuesday game against the Red Sox was cancelled due to thunderstorms, the Mavs made efficient work of a 6-0 win Wednesday to begin a scheduled doubleheader before edging a 3-2 win to close out the night.

Jaymon Cervantes faced three more than the minimum number of batters in the shortened seven-inning game, striking out six and only letting up three hits. No Sox player made it past second base.

Meanwhile, first-inning, two-out singles from Colton Wright, Sal Rodriguez and Louie Canjura opened up a two-run lead that proved to be more than enough. David Vilches, Carson Johnson and Wright all doubled in a threerun fifth, then Julien Ly singled and scored in the sixth to end the book on Regina starter Kyle Wilson.

Wilson was named the WMBL’s pticher of the week Monday after throwing a onehitter against Swift Current. He fell to 3-2, still with an earned run average of 2.64.

Barry Caine collected the win in Game 2 after holding Regina to a pair of runs on five hits through four frames. Tyler Shumpert earned the save.

Sox starter Brian Raymond took the loss.

Now 26-5, the Mavericks can rubber-stamp their spot in Western Major Baseball League playoffs with one more win, or fewer if 10-21 Brooks and Fort McMurray lose any games.

At 20-11 the Red Sox sit second in the WMBL’s Eastern Division.

Medicine Hat has today off before hosting Fort McMurray four times this weekend, starting with a 7:05 p.m. start at Athletic Park Friday, then a 3:05 p.m. game Saturday in which the Giants will be the host team. That game was rained out in Fort McMurray last month. They’ll then play at 7:05 p.m. Saturday and 2:05 p.m. Sunday to wrap the season series.
