Man once shot four times by police arrested again for impersonating a cop

A local man has been charged once again with impersonating a police officer and is also facing other charges, the Medicine Hat Police Service announced Thursday.

Michael Carolan, 38, allegedly entered a preschool Tuesday and became agitated with staff members, states a release from the MHPS. Carolan allegedly said he was a police officer, and staff members thought they saw a badge and a knife on Carolan’s belt.

Carolan also said he had access to firearms, according to the release.

Staff from the school contacted police shortly after the encounter.

Years prior, Carolan faced similar charges of impersonating a police officer and was sentenced to 90 days time served for presenting himself as a police officer and offering assistance to a sheriff conducting a traffic stop near Strathmore.

Carolan was also involved in an incident in 2013 where police responded to a 911 call made by him from his Ross Glen residence.

Carolan refused to follow instructions to drop his gun, resulting in police shooting him three times, twice in the back and once in the face. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team determined the shooting was justified.

Carolan now faces charges of impersonating a police officer, uttering threats and breach of probation.

Carolan will appear in court Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
