Hat Open in full swing

It’s Open season at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club.

The MHTC Open kicked off Wednesday with men’s open and intermedia­te singles action and carries on through Sunday with dozens of matches across five different divisions.

Men’s open top seed Raymond Weich gets his tournament started tonight at 5 p.m. against Corey Streifel on the main court as one of six matches in the division. Second seed Calvin Heller will face Connor Doyle at 2 p.m.

In the women’s open, top seed Kristen Norris and second seed Lauren Danroth will wait until Saturday to hit the court, while six other matches go tonight.

Men’s doubles action officially kicks off with two matches tonight, but eight more are on the docket for Friday at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Top seeds Boris Holan and Trevor Riddell open the tournament Friday at 6 p.m., while second seed duo Raymond and Niall Weich hit the court an hour earlier.

The women’s doubles bracket opens Friday, though top-seeded mother-daughter duo Linda and Kristen Norris and second-seed pairing Lauren Danroth and Erika Miller will open their campaigns Saturday.

In the men’s intermedia­te division, top seed Quinlan O’Driscoll defeated Paul Avery (6-0, 6-1) to advance. Third seed Messele Fentabil also advanced, besting Ryder Siegers (6-0, 6-1).

Championsh­ip play is slated for Sunday.
