Bantam Tigers move in to tie for first in division

One streak ended, so the South East Athletic Club’s Tigers simply started a new one.

The bantam AAA squad moved into a tie for first place in their division with a pair of convincing wins this past weekend, 5-0 in Red Deer and 6-2 in Airdrie.

At Red Deer Saturday, the Tigers made a statement against the Rebels, who they now share the division lead with. Though they were outshot 31-22, goalie Kaiden Morin turned aside everything that came his way for the shutout. Shane Smith and Dawson Seitz each scored twice, Smith adding an assist, while Vann Yuhas had a goal and two assists.

None of the goals came on the power play, and the disciplined SEAC bunch only took three penalties of their own.

The win in Airdrie Sunday was more of the same. Tyler Broesky had a had trick and a helper, Kieran Christianson scored twice, while Smith had the other goal plus three assists.

In net, Bodee Weiss made 25 stops, the only goals on him coming during Airdrie man advantages.

The 6-3-2 Tigers head to Lethbridge Saturday, then host Calgary Sunday (3:15 p.m., Hockey Hounds) before a three-week break from games.

Midget 15’s

SEAC’s midget 15-year-old team split their weekend at home in dramatic fashion.

On Saturday they fell 5-0 to the Red Deer North Star Chiefs. Foxx Doell had two goals for the Chiefs while Colby Knight registered a 25save shutout.

Sunday’s game was a barnburner, a 6-5 win over the Calgary Bruins that saw the hosts pot the winner with 32 seconds left in the third period.

Cayden Dumanowski capped the wild finish, which saw the Tigers respond twice to Bruins goals in the waning minutes.

Ten seconds after a Calgary goal, Gerrett Harty scored to make it 4-4. With 1:55 to go Jarred Schrock made it 5-5. Brendan Olson, who made 32 saves in Saturday’s loss, came in as a backup to make 26 more and get the win in net.

SEAC hosts Calgary Gold Saturday (7:45 p.m., Hockey Hounds) before heading to Calgary Sunday for a road game.

Midget AA

Donning pink uniforms and selling treats in the stands for a good cause, the midget AA Hounds were going to have a successful Saturday night regardless of what the scoreboard at the Kinplex said.

As it turned out, they were all smiles about that, too.

The Medicine Hat team raised $2,500 for the Marjoy E. Yuill Cancer Centre at the hospital, plus beat Lethbridge 4-2.

The team’s fourth annual cancer awareness evening was a hit, and a good, close game with the home team winning was perhaps a perfect finish.

Ryley Manz had a pair of second-period goals to lead the way. Brandon Kasdorf added one early and Brayden Anderson’s empty-netter salted away the victory. Nate Hoffman made 24 saves as his team outshot the Hurricanes 35-26.

Bantam AA

The bantam AA Hounds earned a split to wind up their third straight weekend on home ice.

After losing 5-2 to the Foothills Bisons Saturday, the Hounds beat Airdrie’s Lightning 7-2 Sunday at the Moose Rec Centre.

Brady Mahar and Luke Renschler each scored in the loss, even though they outshot Foothills 31-20.

Sunday was a close game until the Hounds exploded for six goals in the third period. Caleb Garrecht had two and assisted on two others, while Renschler, Zach Hauck, Tiaga Hernandez and Dawson Stewart had the others. Ty Flaig had the team’s first goal in the second period. Hauck, Flaig and Cale Nahorney each added two assists while Zach Ferguson made 25 saves in net.

Peewee AA

The peewee AA Hounds have been pushed by the Wheatland Braves the last two seasons, and the rivalry is far from over.

On Saturday the teams played to a 4-4 tie at the Moose Rec Centre, each extending unbeaten strings to seven games.

First-period goals from Deegan Bert, Deegan Kinniburgh and Josh Evaschesen led the way for Medicine Hat, which went up 4-1 on a Slade McFadzen power play goal in the second. But Wheatland pushed back, tying the game 4-4 before the second intermission according to the online game summary.

Medicine Hat was the only team to beat Wheatland this season until Lethbridge ended the Braves’ streak Sunday. Medicine Hat also has one loss on the season after beating Okotoks 7-4 Friday night. Evaschesen and Samuel Hynes had two goals each in that win while Kaige Schafer made 29 saves.

Their next game? Nov. 9 at the Moose, once again versus the Braves.
