Trio arrested after woman robbed, beaten, extorted and unlawfully confined
Three Medicine Hatters have been arrested following a police investigation into a suspected drug-fueled incident where a woman was robbed, beaten, extorted and unlawfully confined last week.
According to the Medicine Hat Police Service Major Crimes Section, a woman entered a house in the southeast area of the city around 9 p.m. on Oct. 24.
She was then assaulted by two females with a blunt object and had some personal property stolen from her.
The victim was forcibly confined in the house while the suspects attempted to extort funds from her in exchange for her release.
She was able to free herself and call the authorities early in the morning.
Police say the victim and suspects were known to each other.
Amanda Kaye, 36, faces charges of robbery, unlawful confinement, extortion, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with bail conditions.
Kaye was sentenced to 90 days in jail in March after pleading guilty to possessing methamphetamine.
Theresa Babitzke, 53, faces counts of robbery, unlawful confinement, extortion, assault with a weapon, possession for the purposes of trafficking and possession of stolen property.
Matthew Babitzke, 29, is charged with robbery, unlawful confinement and possession of stolen property.
All three are scheduled to appear in court this morning.
