Students from all grades at Dr. Ken Sauer School participated Friday in the Walk for Wishes to raise money for Medicine Hat Children’s Wish. The students raised roughly $4,000.
Dr. Ken Sauer School participated in its inaugural Walk for Wishes campaign Friday, raising $4,000 for the local chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Vice principal Carla Carrier said the school was approached by the foundation to host a Walk for Wishes, which schools around the city participate in annually.
“We’ve made a decision this year to focus on different traits and values monthly for our kids and school community. This month was the theme of gratitude,” said Carrier.
“Walk for Wishes really fit in nicely with our theme, giving thanks for the things we have and being able to give back by showing acts of kindness.”
The school kicked off its fundraising on Oct. 22, completing it Friday.
“All those donations return to the community locally and will go toward making a wish for one of our kids who are struggling with health (issues),” Carrier said.
Donna Serr, the Medicine Hat Children’s Wish Foundation chairperson, was particularly excited to bring the walk to the school in its second year of existence.
“Dr. Ken Sauer School is a brand new school in Medicine Hat and it’s their first walk this year,” she said.
The funding goes toward the local chapter’s general operations, Serr added.
The foundation has been able to grant eight wishes for children this year, including purchasing a trailer for the family of a young boy who’s unable to walk or talk but loves the outdoors.
Another got “an amazing super wheelchair that goes in the water, on sand, on snow.”
They’re currently working on sending a local child who recently had a kidney transplant with a trip to Comic-Con International in San Diego.
