Peewee teams faring well so far

It’s been a perfect start to the season for the top female minor hockey team in Medicine Hat.

The peewee Wildcats dominated the Okotoks Oilers Blue in a pair of games on the weekend, beating them 8-1 Saturday and 5-0 Sunday on home ice.

At the Kinplex Saturday, Keyana Bert had a pair of goals while Hannah Orr, Leila Schultz, Brianna Finke, Riley Gramlich, Brooke Johnson and Taya Christie had the others.

Sunday at the Family Leisure Centre, Maddy Ferguson stopped all 15 shots in a 5-0 shutout. Traeh Hall scored twice while Schultz, Keira Grant and Katie Kuipers also found the back of the net. Medicine Hat outshot the visitors 38-15, after outshootin­g them 61-13 Saturday.

Their Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League schedule continues with a game against Olds Saturday, 4:15 p.m. at Hockey Hounds Arena.

Peewee AA

As for Medicine Hat’s top male peewee team, they were edged out for a spot in their home tournament final Sunday.

Calgary’s Southwest Cougars earned a 5-4 overtime win over the Hounds in the semifinals. The hosts went unbeaten in the round robin and have now only lost twice all season.

The Cougars beat Taber 4-1 in the final later Sunday.

Bantam AAA

The South East Athletic Club Tigers split a pair of 4-2 games in Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League play, losing in Lethbridge before picking up a win over the Calgary Flames at home.

On Saturday, the Golden Hawks’ Ryler Roersma got the winner with 1:38 remaining in the third period after the Tigers; Vann Yuhas had tied it a few minutes earlier.

Roersma added an emptynette­r for the home side. Shane Smith had SEAC’s other goal while Bodee Weiss made 34 saves.

On Sunday at Hockey Hounds it was Smith who broke a 2-2 deadlock midway through the third and Tyler Miller who had an empty-net insurance goal in the final minute for the Tigers. Kaiden Morin stopped 37 shots, while Denyn Smith and Tyler Broesky had the other goals.

South East now gears up for the 46th annual Hockey Hounds tournament Nov. 1518.

Midget 15’s

The midget 15-year-old Tigers got a point out of a twogame weekend, tying the Calgary Blackhawks after taking a close loss to Calgary Gold.

Gold won on 4-3 Saturday in Medicine Hat on a goal with 3:30 remaining. Vaughn Strutt, Tanner Gold and Hayden Prosofsky scored for South East.

In Calgary Sunday, Quintin Unreiner had what looked to be a game-winner until a Blackhawks goal in the final minute resulted in a 1-1 tie. Aidan Low had 31 saves for the Tigers, who are back in Calgary this Saturday.

Midget AA

Lethbridge’s Hounds got a measure of redemption on their Medicine Hat cousins in midget AA hockey Saturday.

A week after Medicine Hat beat Lethbridge, the two Hounds teams met again but this time with Lethbridge earning a 3-2 victory on home ice.

Medicine Hat trailed 3-0 until desperatio­n goals from Kyden Moore — one on the power play with 1:46 to go and another with 45 seconds left in the third period — made for a crazy finish. Shots were 32-17 in the Gas City’s favour.

Bantam AA

The bantam AA Hounds won twice on the road, 4-1 over Central Alberta Saturday and 6-4 over Red Deer Sunday.

Ty Flaig, Brady Mahar, Braden Patey and Caleb Garrecht scored Saturday. Sunday it was Flaig, Patey, Tiaga Hernandez, Kai Kukurudza, Braxton Thornton and Aiden Ma doing the damage.
